Details of boot procedure to detect plug and play devices

How does windows identifies the plug and play devices connected to it at time of booting?

Is there any way to reinitiate the detection process if windows fails to detect the hardware?

I am facing problem in the detection of cameras connected to the firewire port.

You can force your computer to re-detect PNP hardware by scanning for hardware changes in Device Manager.

Right-click My Computer and choose Properties... to open the System Properties dialog.
Choose the Hardware Tab and click the Device Manager button to open Device Manager.
Select any item in the device tree to activate all of the buttons on the menu bar.
Click the button that looks like a computer with a magnifying glass to "Scan for hardware changes". This will initiate a scan of Plug-and-Play compliant devices.
