Unhappy DNS error

Hi,

I am running winxp pro, clean install, and just installed a modem. I can ping the local loopback, I can ping my ISP's DNS server, but I cannot ping a website. And I get the server not found, page cannot be displayed from MSIE using either the name or ip address, dns error. I borrowed a laptop and can connect fine, but not with my desktop. Would my problem be related to the IIS? Could you point me to a resource?

I tried mcalixte's registry fix from the previous thread "cannot find server or DNS" but that didn't help. I'm thinking that there is a security policy or something preventing me from connecting. In the local security settings, local policies, user rights there is an entry that says "deny access to this computer from the network, with values of Guest and support_388945a0. Deleted those, didn't get me connected.

In the services, network connections properties, dependencies, there's an entry that says "This system depends on the following components: RPC, service: Internet connection firewall, internet connection sharing. Also in services, the DHCP client is not started. When I attempt to start it, I get the error: could not start, error #1068 failed to start. I haven't checked for a group policy (gpedit.msc) since I just found that suggestion. Anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance
Patti

Assuming this question is about your IIS and not a question about general networking, is the WWW service running?

I didn't see a listing for web services. Maybe I just didn't see it this morning when I was looking at settings. Is this something that I can repair with the OS installation disk?

The computer that I have I bought from university surplus. The university runs on a LAN. Even though the machine came "sanitized", which I assume means the OS was wiped, and I formatted/partitioned it prior to installing the OS, could the past environment be a factor? Though I would think that all of the previous settings would be deleted when it was formatted.

Sorry, maybe I'm reaching for straws, but I've been trying to get this machine online for two weeks now, and it's driving me bananas!

I'm trying to connect to my ISP with a dial up connection, it's the only computer in the house, so no routers. Sorry if this is an inappropriate place to post, but I thought maybe IIS had something to do with me not being able to view web pages. I installed IIS this morning, in the add/remove windows components, that checkbox was not checked, so I checked it and began the installation...still no web pages. Currently I am working with M$ KB article 314067 to see if I can resolve the issue. You can delete my entries from this bulletin board if it doesn't benefit members looking for answers to IIS.

I'm going to move to the Windows OS forum, you may have better luck there.
