empty jpegs
This is a virus designed to do maximum damage: you're right, if the where deleted you could recover them using various tools, the designer of the virus anticipated this.
i know of no way for you to retrieve this data my advice: - burn that cd (litterly, use a blow torch or something) - do a search on your entire system for jpg, jpeg and any other variaion and delete them - look for any other file types that have been "zerood-out", delete them 2 - run virus scanners (the most recent possible) - backup any data you absolutely need and check it again with a scanner - format c: (and whatever other drives you have) - find the guy that let the viruson the disk and use the blowtorch on him... disclaimer: that last part was a joke..... , dont use the blow torch on him.... , seriously! *EDIT how can i possibly have posted before you, if i replyed to your post ???? something wrong with the server's clock ? I recently had some photographs developed and had them put on a CD. Unfortunately there seems to have been a virus on the disc with the photographs which were in jpeg format. When the jpegs from the disc were saved to the 'C' drive all the existing jpeg files were emptied. They were not deleted as such as they still exist in their original location, but when properties are accessed the file size shows as 0 bytes. I have run a restore program which works, and files which had been deleted can be recovered, but these 0 byte jpegs, that have "been emptied" but haven't really been deleted can not be recovered. When I try to access these jpegs through 'Paint Shop Pro' an error message states, "unable to retrieve this format"
Would anyone know how these "empty" jpegs could be recovered on Windows 98??? |
