Exchange Server with Outlook 2K3 on Win2K

Okay, I'm running a PIII laptop with Windows 2000 on it for work. It was built up by someone who theoretically knows what the hell he's doing up at corporate, but I have run into a stumbling block or three.

My email account for the workplace was created, it seems, in Outlook 2003 already. It will not, however, connect with the Exchange Server. The desktop computer on my desk does connect, using the same LAN cable, so I know it isn't the server, it is something in the laptop.

I also cannot get a working connection with Gmail with this Outlook, either... don't know if that's related.

I found a MSKB related to authentication problems which I thought might help (it did help me access the Server via Explorer), but it seems to be a dead-end.

Any grand ideas before I break down and call the home office for support?

Haven't made it into work yet... packing up to do so now. If I get some time in the office again today, I'll try posting from there with the log.
