Whatever you're going to replace XP with should provide a way to reformat the drive. If you're looking to erase everything before disposal of the drive, there are programs that will wipe the data off the disk.

You could always get Knoppix and make a bootable CD.

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Are you trying to reinstall XP, or do you want to erase it so you can install a different OS on it?

In either case, a bootble OS CD such as a Linux LIve CD would allow you to erase teh hard drive and make installation of an OS easier. If you need an XP installation disk, however, you might want to go to the support site of your computer manufacturer and find out where to get the installation files or order a CD before you resort to anything drastic. Some computers have everything in a hidden partition on your drive and need only to hit a button during boot-up to access the installation and recovery utilities.
