garbled words on start up

I am running win2000 and when I start my computer it has garbled words on the top half of the monitor screen.
When I go into the bio setup I can't see the top of the screen to change any settings, the bottom half of the screen is fine. It actually boots into windows and then it quickly shows a wierd error and then the system auto reboots itself. I tried resetting the bios since someone said it might be a virus in the bios. and I even tried to boot from the cd and it wont do that either. what can I do?

do you have access to a different monitor you can try, do you have a fan or speakers near the monitor now, that wasnt there before, or any other device that might create a magnetic field?

no I don't have anything I think that would create a magnetic field. I did try the monitor on another computer and It works fine. I tried the computer with a different monitor and I had the same problem with garbled top screen.

have seen the same problem on a machine with xp and a radeon 9000 video card, i updated the system drivers(intel) updated the video card drivers, and just while i was at it i updated the bios for the reason the one in question was 2 years old. after this the problem was resolved, not sure which was the actual cure. but you may need to look for updates.

garrbled screen

since you have seen this before would you please tell me how I could possible correct this problem with the drivers if I can even get the computer to stay on.
Once it gets to windows it loads up to the desktop, the screen appears fine but then the computer reports an error and auto restarts. It restarts too quickly to actually read the error.
