Home Network
Hey all,
I have a wireless home network setup and I'm having an issue with connecting to another computer. I have one machine, running XP Pro and another running XP Home. The XP Pro machine has no problems accessing the shared resources on the XP Home machine. The XP Home machine is prompted with a user logon screen when trying to open the shared docs folder or trying to connect to the printer. How do I prevent this? I want anyone connected to this network to be able to access the shared resources. I don't want to setup user accounts on this machine to do this. Thanks |

No, none of my resources are set up with a password. I have one printer I'm trying to allow access to and the shared documents folder on the xp pro machine. I'm guessing I don't have something setup right on the XP Pro machine that it won't allow other machines to gain access to these files without the username and password. It's like the xp pro machine is trying to use remote logons rather than just sharing the resources over the network.
Thanks for the response. Quote:

when you share the resource on the pro system , did you allow network users to modify and change the files ? in the right click menu, properties, and under the sharing tab ? that might do it.
otherwise try enabling the guest account on the pro system without a password. see if this helps. |

Its to do with NTLM permissions.
The thing about XP Home is that it doesn't grant you access to the ACLs unless you run as Administrator under Safe Mode. On the XPP box, what are the NTFS ACLs and WFS ACLs for the SharedDocs folder? |

I tried enabling the guest account a few days ago and it gave me this message: "Logon Failure:the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer." I will retrieve the ACLs when I get out of work today. What's the difference between WFS and NTFS? I only know to look in the Security tab of the properties window. Thanks |

WFS ACLs are accessible via the "Permissions" button on the "Sharing" tab (XP Pro only)

Odd... that should be allowing XP Home users to connect without any trouble.
I'd see if I can duplicate it here, but my home is in an AD (and no turning back, yeah baby!) so I can't really help you, sorry. |

Problem solved! I downloaded a Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tool and entered the following commands: net user guest /active:yes ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest Hopefully this may help someone else if they have a problem. |
