IE Not viewing certain pages
I'm not sure if this is the place for this question, but I'm really at the end of my rope, and could use some advice...
I'm using Win2K w/IE6.0, and can access most websites, but on some, particularly on secure pages (ones I have to log onto the site to use) I get "Cannot find server or DNS Error" screen. This only happens on some sites - I can log onto this site and others, but on some sites (my bank's website, PayPal, etc.) I can get to the Home page, but if I try to log on, or click the "forgot password" link, I get the page unavailable error, as described above. I've deleted the internet files and cookies, downloaded the latest IE upgrade that I can find for IE6 and Win2K, Ive gone to Add/Remove Programs and done the IE repair function, but nothing helps. Is there a common problem that you have heard of? Thanks, joe Last edited by cjreynolds : May 15th, 2006 at 12:42 AM. |

Hmmm.. there are quite few possibilites that could be faulting here. The most plausible suspect is a firewall soemwhre on thesystem, or on your network.
Check out the list of items on the following microsft trouble shoot pages. They are meant for Xp but should still pertain in most part to a win2k system with IE. http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...ct=windowsxpsp2 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=813444 Assuming your browser is fine there are some other possibilities but they normally pertain to 400 bad request errors not DNS errors. (a) there's a proxy server at your ISP that is messing up the requests by not including the headers (b) some security software/firewall/privacy software on your PC that is removing HTTP headers (c) you are using an anonymous service for accessing the web which is just another name for a proxy (d) if you have a broadband router, it is messing up the requests with some sort of internal proxy, possibly as part of it's SPI/NAT handling. If it's something like this, you will be able to access any sites that are on their own IP address (and so don't need the Host: header), but nothing else. Check the proxy settings in IE, turn off the Automatic proxy detection if it's enabled and see if that helps. If it does not turn it back on and get in touch with your ISP or network admin. You could also take a peak at your hosts file and see if the site has been blocked... just throwing suggestions out there for you...

oneMSBi mentioned this too but when this occurred with some of my clients it was because of Norton Internet Security (firewall). Disabling the firewall eliminated the problem. Make sure you try that.
