LAN clients-what DNS should they get?
hello,
where I work, we have a LAN, that reaching the internet through Cisco switch, Cisco router and then cable modem. when i'm giving to a PC (XP) the ISP dns (internet dns), the PC client reaches sites immediately, but the Windows xp log-in ("loading your personal settings" screen) takes FOREVER... like 10-15 min. BUT-if I change the PC's dns address to the DC's IP, instead of the "Outside" DNS, then the log-in time is ok (30 sec), but I can't reach every site on the internet, cuz few sites don't come up with this local DNS (the DC's IP). just for you know-the PC i'm talking about is right after format and re-installation of windows. and the rest I tried are the same. so, the Question is: What IP should I give the client in the lan, so it could log-in normally (fast), and it will still reach Internet web-sites that require some other external (internet) DNS ?Thank you! good day everyone. |

hey,
thanks for the article, but it's related to DC the acts as a DNS server, which i'm not talking about. I just need to make the Authentication time (Windows Login) shorter. |

It was hard to put together what you were saying in your first post. How is your network setup? It only makes sense that the login is slower to go from your network, to your ISP DNS Server, back to your network domain controller. I would have the client setup using the DC IP. Then, the DC should have DNS forwarding setup using the ISP DNS server. |

Like jmh said, you need to solve this problem in the DNS server on the DC. The slowdown is because none of the Active Directory information needed for logins is present in the ISP dns server, so your clients need to be set to use the DC DNS server.

ok, found the solution.
hey,
it was what you guys said- add a "forwarder" DNS at the DC, and all clients with the DC's IP as their DNS. then, for local access-the client has the DC's address, and for Internet Access-the DC is forwarding the request to the ISP's DNS server. thanks a lot! |
