Locking Shotcut Icon
Is there a way to lock a shortcut icon so that users cannot view the path or other setting of the icon?

I have several database set up at work where others have access using shortcut icons I have set up in their computers. I have found out that in several occuations, they follow the links to the folder where the dbase resides and mess with the content. I just figur that if they don't know the link, it will be harder for prying eye to be snooping. Thanks |

eh ? thats the wrong way to go about this..why dont you describe the setup in a lot mroe detail and we'll try and guide you through restricting user permissions the right way.
For starters.. are these users over the network ? where are the db's ? what db's ? mssql ? mysql ? .. do these users need complete access to the db's .. etc etc.. |

Users access the dbases via the network. Each user must log onto the network in order to access files. I am currently using MS Access. There are two related dbases in this folder, a front end with link tables to the back end dbase. The incident happened when the user had trouble accessing the dbase. Instead of asking for help, he decided to fix the problem himself by following the path to the folder and access the backend dbase, potential bad thing. I have since enabled the hidden property of the folder. I just want to prevent this from happening again by hiding the path in the shortcut icon....Thanks |

I don't believe that can be done... I think David beckham is on the right track-- you need to set the permissions in those folders so your users can't do any more damage.

how are the users able to access the directory ? are the db's shared from your machine ? if that is the case then using user permissions on your db host machine will solve the problem. Just authenticate all network users as say guest, and deny guest access permissions to that particular shared folder...or actually deny them write permission.. leave the read and execute.
To learn how to do that google around for how to apply user level permissions. Your file system should be NTFS is you want to use file based permissions but i think since these are network users there is a way to restrict their access even if you are using FAT. |

There is a way to lock the shortcut icons in a way the user can't see the details. There is security software out there that disables context menus and such, (i.e. the user cannot right-click on an icon and bring up the context menu.). This could be pricey though. Fortres Grand has a program called Fortres 101. You can configure it to lock down Windows pretty well. If you don't want to go that expensive route, I suppose to you could always try and figure out how they blocked Windows features.
