Network problem
Hi,
I don't know if it is the best place for this. I want to make a network between two PC. One with Windows 98 and the other with Linux. I tried everything i could find on the internet (or almost) but nothing worked. The network is not running. Can somebody help me? |

Need more information. How are you trying to connect them? Do you have a router? How do you know the network is not running?

You'll need Samba for the Linux box.

can you ping across the two machine ? at which point is your network failing ? the hardware level or the software level ? more information is required to correctly understand what you have attempted.
You will need a simple CAT 5 cable, crimped in "crossover" and 2 Rj45 connectors in the simplest and probably cheapest of setups. Once this is done, just assign static ip's two both machines, something like 192.168.0.1 for one machine and 192.168.0.2 for the other. Once this is done you should be able to ping each machine from the other. If this is successful you know the hardware setup is not the problem. this will work irrespective of the OS windows or Linux. from here on it will be software to tackle to see why your network wont work. To do this we need to know more from your side... tell us what you have done so far... ![]() |
