NTFS permissions question
Howdy folks, Ive got a curious request from one of my users who is a supervisor.
User Adreinne has Read and Execute only to Folder "A" and Full Control to folder "B". Her boss just showed me that she can open an excel file in folder "A" and the do a "Save As" to folder "B" which he doesnt want because the users may create duplicates of files and he only wants one copy. This also goes for word files. My question is - how do I prevent Adreinne from doing this? And still give her Full access to folder "B"? We want her to read but not save the work on folder "A" not just to folder "A" but to anywhere including folder "B". Thanks in advance. Jay |

Set required permissions on folder A, then go to security settings for folder B, click the "Advanced" button, and uncheck "Inherit from parent..." Then set permissions on folder B. I think that should work.

Unless there is some way to completely disable "save as" in programs I don't know how you can prevent a user from saving to a writeable folder anything that opens with a program that offers "save as"
Which is not to say there isn't a way just that I don't know how ![]()

Whoops, I guess I read the question wrong. Yea, I don't know of a way to keep a user from opening a file in a folder and saving it to another folder either. My bad for reading it wrong. |

The only way I can think of, since the contents of folder A is intended to be read-only, is to publish everything in that folder as a .pdf with no save. That way the user can glean the information she wants but can't save it to another folder without some significant work.
