REGISTRY MECHANICS W98SE nightmare
This time a real catastrophy. Downloaded a registry checker, all 4mb, from Meta Products (who have not even answered call for help).
At ShutDown and at StartUp I'm presented with blue screen as follows: Microsoft Registry Checker (MSN non longer supports) c:\windowa\system.dat Restore Desktop (check mark OK) Restoring Devices Listed IN ASP (check mark OK) RESTORING FILES/FOLDERS (no check mark OK) After about ten minutes the horizontal progress bar stops at 86%. Then box appears found an error cannot repair. Try reducing number of files , otherwise REINSTALL (a course of action I will do anything to avoid!) Point is I cannot get out of this screen. No cursor; no boxes of any kind. Must shutsoen, whereupon same thing restarts. At SAFE MODE I deleted anything about Registry with installation date 23AUG05. That is how I am now online. BUT THE SCREEN STILL APPEARS GOING IN OR OUT. Sometimes the error box doesn't appear and I'm in. Sometimes not, and I know not why. Regardless of cause/cure, right now all I want to do is to (permantly) DELETE/REMOVE THAT ENTIRE DAMN SCREEN. I haven't seen it or needed it in several years usage of this Toshiba Portege 7200CTe laptop. You can see this is a real emergency in dire need of some expertise. Failing resolution, and even if successfully resolved, please advise exact path at SafeMode that permits restoration (W98SE) to a given date -- in my case 09AUG05. I dare not shutdown day or night fearing inability to get back. Please help! Cordially, RO This time a real catastrophy. hello,
not sure why you pasted the message twice but still. have you tried booting in safe mode to see if you can get to windows and then fixing the problem from there?? To be honest, from experience with windows 98 i would just re-install. You will waste too much time trying and finally end up re-installing anyway!! RF

Hi guys
Well first time in here and see a familiar issue with system machanics!. I have suffered the dreaded blue screen of death following using this software. I have to agree with radio' Run your W98Se disc to reinstall the deleted or corrupted files - Its the only way around it. It will take you about 30 minutes to do but it save all that formatting and stress going for a full blown rebuild good luck my friend gareth |

For next time, I mean before next time!

Hi, If you have to reinstall, or the next time that you don't need to, make a back up of your files, Partition your "C" into 2, "C" & "D". "C" will be for your Operating System & "D" will be for your files. When Windows crashes badly or a bug has really taken over, just reinstall the O.S. and voila. I discovered this by accident. I had partitioned my "C" into 2 and upon deleting all on drive "C" and reinstalling I noticed "D" was ignored. All my files were still there. Putting the recovery disc in (the one I got with the PC when I bought it) only wipes out the "C" drive. This ought to be tough in Windows 101. Think of all the stress that can be avoided knowing that your files, your hard work is safe on "D". No this does not protect against smart viruses. It helps with crashes. My 2.5 cents. A few more things to try; ALT+TAB, when Internet Explorer has too many windows open an freezes or overruns your screen (lose of control), try it see what happens. CTRL+ALT+DELETE, when freezing you can use the task manager to sometimes close the offending software and get back to work or at least save some of your work, shut down and start fresh or ... F11, makes for more viewing surface in Internet Explorer. Last edited by Richard_000001 : February 25th, 2006 at 07:20 PM. Reason: Spell Check, add more tips |
