Restore points.
I'm just wondering, does anyone know how much memory every restore point approximately needs? I have heard that it needs about 300 Mb. Is this true?

I like to Restore Points at the inn. Although if you have tents or cabins in your inventory you can Restore Points anywhere on the world map.

There is a setting so you can define how much space the retsore point takes up. Right click 'My Computer' on your desktop, click 'Properties' and then click on the 'System Restore' tab. You will see a list of all your drives and whether system restore is active on those drives. Select the drive you want [probly 'C'] and click on the 'Settings' button. Here you can set the percentage of the drive that is to be reserved for the system restore. HTH, --Jon.

the size of the restore point you create is probably going to depend on the amount of software apps you have installed, the size of the various software/registry hives etc..
As chief pointed out, you can limit these settings.. its true they can accumilate over time, but windows has a built in option to clean out old restore points and other unwanted files. Go to the run prompt and type "cleanmgr" and select the partition you want to clean up. Otherwise simply disabling and then re-enabling system restore on all drives will flush any old restore points no longer required. Do this only if your system is running all fine and dandy. |

I've been running without any kind of software antivirus, firewall, and with system restore disabled and I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever. In fact, there is a performance gain by disabling system restore.

i'm just curious, are you running this machine on the open internet directly ? or are you protected by a hardware firewall, or proxy or router ? For how long..? i would consider you very very lucky to have escaped without a single infection if your system is directly connected to the internet. You must patch your system very quickly indeed.. ![]() |

Before I switched to XP-SP2 I was running XP-SP1 (with no additional patches) for the best part of 6 months.
But yeah, I am behind a hardware firewall, nothing gets in ![]() So the only way I can get infected is if I execute a program locally that turns out to be virulent. But that's not a concern of mine, I use online "upload a file to check it" virus scanners. I really should be running as LUA, however, but I've got a lot of legacy apps that don't work well as LUA, but I haven't had any problems running as Local Administrator. (Although I almost never log in as my domain's Administrator account locally) |

if you want to see how much space on the HD the system restore is taking up right click my computer and select properties. Then select the system restore tab and it'll tell you. Or you can go to control panel > System Information for the same effect. Hope that helped
