where does the SAM file get stored in my hard disk ?assume that i installed windows xp in my C:

can you tell me how can i extract password form a SAM file...?
i know that first hashes must be obtained from it using some stuff like pwdump3 etc... then the hashes must be ripped using john the ripper..but its not working for me ...i am not able to get the hashes using pwdump3 ...is there any other way to do it?
