does installing windows xp service pack 2 format the computer or delete any files or folders??

lol no... Microsoft are not SO dumb. it won't delete anything, however the SP2 will change settings and stuff related to privacy and security (permissions) thus it can cause certain problems. anyway, the benefits weight much more than the risk, so go ahead and install it. if you face problems, we may be able to help, I'm sure that by this day, there are no fatal problems. but you should make a backup before you do run the install just in case and also it is worth setting a system restore point. Both are always good practise if you are making big changes to your system
