Question Two LAN Pc's can't see each other

Hi all!
Ok; I have two Pc conected to internet by a hub. One is Windows 2000, and the other Xp. My problem is that the 2000 can't see the xp, and vice-versa. Both have the same workgroup, but diferent name. My ISP give me verry different IP (one is 200.xxx.xxx.xx and the other 201.xxx.xxx.xx). Do you know why the computers can't see each other??

This is a basic routing problem. Both your computers are attached to a single network segment (I assume that this is Ethernet) and due to this they will be using PPPoE or some other method to connect to the ISP and this may also be why they receive such diverse IP addresses. The IP addresses they receive will make it impossible for the two devices to communicate with one another without the use of a router. You can however use the command prompt to run ipconfig to shed even more light on the matter.

The question: do the computers receive a 169.254.x.x address apart from the IP address they have received from the ISP?

Thanks for your answer.
As you wrote, my network is connected by Ethernet, but the Pc's don't receive a IP with 169.254.x.x. And... What is PPPoE??

Look at the gateway address and subnet mask values provided by your ISP and make sure they are correct. If you are getting two IP's not in the same subnet, I'd be talking to the ISP, normally you'd get multiple IP's in the same subnet.

You may be able to add a static route but you really shouldn't have to take such steps.

An easier solution might be to obtain a low-cost broadband router.

What do you mean with:

? (Both computers are with functional internet)

And..

is a easy solution?

Maybe will be easier just buying a router

Are you getting two fixed IP addresses from your ISP? If so, they should have provided you the the settings for each IP, including the subnet mask value and gateway value. If the subnet mask is incorrect, it's possible to have internet access but still have a broken LAN.

I haven't had to work with static routes in a long time, it's a solution I try to avoid. I'd just get a router myself (and then you can drop one of the IP's if you're paying extra for it).
