Upgraded to 2K Pro; tried to run Windows Update to update to IE 6 SP1; Problems

Hey --

I just upgraded my Mom's Compaq Presario BW-5122 (600 MHz Celeron; 128 MB RAM; over 7GB (12GB total) of free HD; old-a$$ network card, etc) and the machine is nuts.

Half the time I get a lsass.exe error on startup from NT Adminstrator ...

The machine was fine running Windows 98 but I thought I could make the computer last longer as a Win 2K machine. It's a Compaq I bought 4 years ago.....

I've upgraded about a half dozen PII and PIII machines from 98 to 2K with little to no difficulty. I had to replace a few NICs in the process but that's not problem. I was going to do the same thing to this one ... despite the fact that the upgrade report didn't say it needed it.

She's also got a DSL connection that runs from this generic verizon 'modem' to the computer.

Internet Explorer is nuts -- it opens for a second and then shuts down really fast. When I try to go to Windows Update, it redirects me to timy.com or exit3.*something*.com ..... I thought it was some kind of virus that was caused by the upgrade and immediate go to Windows Update.

I also get a Explorer.exe 'End Now' message when I try to restart.....

I've been able to overcome all or most (software) challenges thus far with Windows .... but this is nuts....

Should I try to re-install Windows?

It was an ISO download from a company I do work for's MSDN account....

Weird stuff...

LMK if you need more info.............

Well I got it worked out.

There's nothing wrong with Windows. I installed and ran Norton AV. There were over 900 infected files on that computer.

A couple of them are still around and are super annoying: WSup (WtoolsA, etc.) is one of them.

I got rid of this nasty backdoor krud thing called rtkit.......

That machine is still a mess but I got it figured out.....
