USB no longer works, HELP!

Hello All,

About 2 weeks ago, We upgraded to XP SP2 at home. Just recently, I tried connecting my Pcoket PC to the computer, and it wouldn't work, I then went around with all our USB devices and have recieved the same message "Device Not Recognized". The only USB device that still seems to work on that computer is the Microsoft mouse (hmmm microsoft and microsoft, what a surprise)

We tried un-installing the USB controller driver, then re-installing it, un-installing SP2 then un-installing the USB driver and re-installing it. I am using the most recent USB drivers for this controller, and I have current anti-virus software (although we did find one worm that it had missed by using Trand Micro House Call)

We also re-installed all software that came with these USB devices, to no avail

We searched through the knowledge bank and found one article about something similar, but I know we do not need an external powered USB hub

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you

-mwalts

Open your device manager, and view your USB devices.

A. Under Device Status, does it read: "This device is working properly."?
B. Is: "Use this device (enabled)" selected?

The only other thing that I, personally, can think of is to check the manufacturer web site for each USB component you own and check for compatibility issues with SP2, especially if they are all from the same manufacturer. If I find anything else out I will let you know.

just a quick FYI,

I found the problem, it was a doozy. We have 6 USB ports 2 of which the case routes from the back to the front, but the front mounts were Uber cheap. It seems that the bottom black connection guide broke off, but was still usable. At some point someone tried to jam their USB device (I'm betting it was my brother... the jerk) into the port, and one of the wires was bent up and touched ground, which as we all know is not good at all. I'm just lucky that this didn't short out my whole motherboard and just the USB sub-system. Anyway, I pried it back up then I disconnected the front mounts from the motherboard and now it all works

Thanks for all the help

-mwalts
