Vista Network Inregularity
Hi,
I just bought a vista home computer. I have it connected to the same router as my xp one. However, I get a network jam where the computer seems to lose all internet connections for a while randomly. I'd be surfing the net then suddenly page cannot be found. Then after about 10 min its normal again. Any ideas? Mike

when it loses internet connectivity, if you go into cmd prompt, and type in ipconfig /all, does it list an ip, gateway, and dns servers? If so, can you ping something like www.go.com? Can you ping the gateway and dns servers?
Is this wired, or wireless? Is the XP machine wired or wireless? Given the information you posted, could be a number of things..... let's narrow it down. If the Vista machine connects wireless, can you connect via ethernet? We need to know all of the aspects involved in order to better diagnose.

I ran the MSN Messenger network test when that happened, and apparently everything's fine except for critial ports... I don't know what could be blocking those ports...
And it's not an XP machine, it's a wired Vista. |

Ok, when it's down, can you ping the gateway and dns servers? Can you ping a web address such as www.go.com? If no to all of the above, can you do a loopback test? (Ping 127.0.0.1)

Yeah I can, but I think the port for MSN and port 80 gets blocked... I turned off all my firewalls too.

It seems like the advanced windows firewall may be enabled. To open port 80 outbound, you will need to disable the advanced outbound protection part of the windows firewall.
Open the run prompt from the start menu. Type in wf.msc and press enter, also accept any security dialogs presented. Once the window opens, right click on the "windows firewall with advanced security on local computer" in the left hand column, and select properties. Once in properties select the private profile tab. In the private profile tab change the "outbound connections" option to allow. Also, do you have Skype running (such as myspace messenger) |

Heyy, thank you. I've changed that and many other settings, it's working for now. Thank you so much, I had my XP install disc ready. =)

Glad I could help. Heh, I still am not convinced in using Vista. To be honest, I still recommend XP. Vista seems to "nag" too much for one, and the main thing is it's a huge resource hog.
