Windows media player error
Greetings all! I’ll tell you up front that I am a little “computer challenged” and I’m hoping someone can assist. When I try to launch windows media player this message pops up before it even launches, “windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close”. It worked fine a couple of days ago so I attempted a system restore but so some reason it wont run completely. Here is the error information from WMP,
AppName: wmplayer.exe ModVer: 6.0.2900.2805 AppVer: 10.0.0.3802 Offset: 00017cae ModName: shdocvw.dll Exception Information Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000 Record: 0x000000000000000000 Address: 0x0000000077777cae I am running windows XP if it matters, HELP! ![]() |

See this: Windows Media Player Error
Also, do you have Service Pack 2 installed? If not, you should install it. Even if it doesn't fix your problem, it could help prevent others. Finally, if all else fails, uninstall Windows Media Player and reinstall it. JMH

Need help too
I got the same problem a couple of days ago. I've uninstalled WMP10 and everything...nothing works. Anybody got any hints? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Right-click My Computer and select "Properties". You should be able to see which service pack you have installed on the that screen. |

From your first post, it looks like you have an old version of WMP...like version 6 old. WMP is up to version 10 so that could be your problem. But if you like WinAmp better, that's cool.

No you're wrong...that's the ModVer which isn't related to the version of the program. The AppVer is the application version, which if you look at his original post is 10.xxx |

Does winamp play divx movies or do you have to get seperate codecs for that too? Even if I get winamp to work, I still want WMP to work. I have WMP10 and SP2 for windows...I'm all up to date, just that WMP stopped working one day. Any ideas?

Windows media player error
The Exception error: 0xC0000005 is a Access Violation
This error is generated by an illegal "memory access violation". This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and more commonly under Windows XP Service pack 2, malware/adware installations. Some viruses and other security threats that attack your computer by running malicious code from memory locations that only Windows and other programs should use. This type of threat causes damage by taking over one or more memory locations in use by a program This type of attack is very common and that is why Microsoft have introduced DEP into Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. Try booting in safe mode and running media player to see if it works, if it does it could be your anti virus software that’s causing it. Disable Buffer Overflow Protection and re-install WMP 10 Else boot in safe mode and run anti virus software and anti spyware to check if you have been infected. Then check that the OS files are alright by running sfc /scannow from Start>Run This error can also be cause if the Jscript registry is incorrect try the following: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll, and then click OK. 3. Click OK. 4. Click Start, and then click Run. 5. In the Open box, type regsvr32 vbscript.dll, and then click OK. 6. Click OK. If all fails you might have to do a clean install of your OS
