Angry Windows XP help - Windows Installer

My wife's boss tried to install a program on her desktop and it wouldn't install because it wasn't running WinXP Pro (she had Home Edition). So she had a disc that she purchased and and took it upon herself to "upgrade" to Pro. Of the two desktops, one went relatively well (IE is screwed up) but the other is really messed up. During the upgrade there was some error message but she doesn't remember what it was.

The result is, that whenever you open IE, anything that opens a folder (My Computer, Control Panel, etc) a windows installer window opens up for about 2 minutes. After which, the folder or the browser opens. In the browser, when you try to move along to say another site, it pops open again. I installed FF 3.0 and it runs without a problem so I'm thinking it's a MS thing.

ANy ideas? Any way to determine what application or file is trying to install something? What it's trying to install?

Thanks for any help!!!
