Windows Xp Home (sp2) Task Manager Problem

A beer (or personality enhancement device of choice ) to the first one to successfully help me:
When I Hit ctrl,alt,delete to bring up task manager, it starts up, flashes onto the screen and then disappears leaving the icon down in the task bar. So I then run my cursor over it and it disappears. I reinstalled xp and run virus checkers adware remover spyware remover. Nothing and I've still not cured it. Same thing happens when I try to initiate Task manager to pop up utilyzing the right click on the task bar. This problem is driving me freakin' crazy. Has anybody got any ideas to whats happening and how I can cure it.

Could be a Virus/hack. Rename taskmgr.exe and run the renamed program. You should then be able to look at the task list. Run HiJackThis:

To kill processes that are suspect, try PSKill:

If I've posted some code above, you might think it looks a bit simplistic. It might be. I'd rather people tried the next step themselves rather than getting a full solution on a plate. That way they learn more!

Stupid thing ask perhaps, but have you just tried double clicking the icon of the task manager in the system tray after it has disappeared.. the green and black icon that show the cpu usage ?

try running the taskmanger directly from the system32 folder...

navigate to the c:\windows\system32\ folder and hit the icon that says taskmgr.exe

If you can run it this way, then you might want to run the following reg script to restore the taskmanager

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre  ntVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre  ntVersion\Group Policy Objects\LocalUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre  ntVersion\Policies\System]
"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000
"**del.DisableTaskMgr"=" "

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr  entVersion\policies\system\]
"DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"DisableCAD"=dword:00000000

save the above code as a .reg file using notepad and click it to run it.

Also do an advanced forum search on this forum with the keywords taskmanager and see what results are shown.. this kind of problem has been commonly reported. The solutions vary..
