Exclamation Windows XP Pro start up probs

Having tried to install a Windows update, the computer froze. The only way I could get out of it was by pressing the computer reset button. Since that moment, when the computer boots up it goes straight to the screen giving me the following options:

Start up normally
Sart up in last known working configuration
Start up in safe mode
Start up in safe mode with networking
Start up in safe mode with command prompt

Having tried all but the the last two options, the computer goes to the Windows logo screen and after three of those bar thingys pass, the computer reverts back to the screen asking me to select one of the above-mentioned options.

Someone please help as its not even my computer

Disconnect everything from the PC before starting (printers, modems, network leads etc) in case the hardware drivers are the issue or it is trying to "detect" the hardware.

It does sound like Windows is seriously damaged - if you have the Windows XP CD you can attempt to boot from that. You may need to set boot from CD in the bios.

Other than that you need someone who knows how to recover Windows to look at the PC because there are 100s of reasons why it might be doing this.
