In Safe Mode's Administrator account you can change NTFS ACLs, not sure about WFS ACLs though.

Of course, XP Home is crippled anyway.

ACL = Access Control List

One of the more powerful features of NTFS is the fine-graded security embedded in the platform that integrates with Active Directory (or local NTLM).

In XP Pro, folders have 2 ACLs accessible via Explorer. The first one controls local access, the second one is the WFS one that sets share permissions.

When your computer is a member of a domain, they behave slightly differently and the NTFS ACL needs to be a superset of the WFS ACL.

ah! that makes some sense to me! I take it that won't solve my problem directly though as i am not part of a domian. It is just a workgroup network.

You don't necessarily need to fork out any cash for XP Pro...

Well, if you know where to look, you can get XP Pro legally quite cheaply.

Have a look around on NewEgg, OcUK, eBuyer (not to be confused with eBay) or whatever your favorite component shop it (but not Amazon!) and look for "OEM Windows XP", it usually goes for about a third of the price of the retail version. The only catches are:

a) No box
b) No documentation
c) No technical support from Microsoft

But the thing is, right... if you purchase a 5-Pack for support from Microsoft, it still costs less than if you buy Retail XP, which only comes with a 2-Pack support

There are some other catches with the OEM version. You should read the license before you purchase an OEM version software.
