XP Pro Original
Hi

I have a PC running XP Pro which I can not update because I installed it from a copied CD.

I have now purchased an original Windows XP Pro CD with a unique key. Is it possible to install this Windows over the old one using the new key without formatting the machine so I don't loose all my settings and don't have to install al my programs again. Whilst at the same time now be able to use Windows Update?

as far as I know yes, you can "overwrite" your existing Windows
and the non-system files will be preserved.
however, you better make backup of everything.

Yes, as Shadow said, you can install over the existing Win installation.

There are ways to change the key in the registry without installing again at all; a judicious query via the search engine of your choice should reveal the details.
