Permissions - Access from a Domain to a Workgroup
Just received a new laptop for work and I’m trying to figure out a home network access problem. I work out of a home office.
I have a home network with both wireless and wired access using a Linksys router. Home PC/Server running Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and is part of the “Home workgroup” and is connected to the router via twisted pair. I have a new Dell Laptop also running Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and is part of the “Work domain”. The new Dell Laptop came with Symantec Endpoint Protection.
Both computers can access the WAN with no issue. On to the Laptop I can use ‘remote desktop’ to connect to server in the ‘Home workgroup’. Once connected I access back to the laptop drives that have been brought over as a local resource. From the laptop ‘Work domain’ I can ping the server ‘Home workgroup’ both with its IP and server name. From the server ‘Home Workgroup’ I can ping the laptop with its IP addr but when I use the laptops name the ping request fails.
From the ‘work domain’ on the laptop I cannot access any of the drives on the ‘home workgroup’ nor can I see or connect to the printer on the ‘home workgroup’. When I use windows explorer to access I’m prompted for userid and pw and it comes back ‘windows cannot find XXXX. Check the spelling and try again.’. Or when I use a utility that keeps directorys in synch between the two servers I get ‘The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you’.
Now the crazy situation. My work uses Cisco’s VPN for access. If I check the ‘Allow Local LAN Access’, everything works perfectly when I’m tunneling into work. Once connected I do get a popup notification note from Symantec says it’s changing from a “SHQ Roaming” service to a “SHQ VPN” connected.
So what do I need to do to get access all the time, not just when I’m using VPN?
Thanks in advance
