I'm trying to set permissions on a shared folder on a Win XP Pro desktop ("server"). At the moment I'm just testing on my home network and trying to access via a Win XP Pro laptop ("client").
On the "server", I have created a couple of new users under Computer Management, set them in the Users group and have removed Simple File Sharing.
On the shared folder properties, sharing permissions, I have removed all permissions other than Administrators and Users, who both have Full Control. Under security I also just have permission set for Administrators and Users, again both have Full Control.
In advanced, I removed inherit permissions and have also just given permission to Administrators & Users (Full Control).
When I try and access the shared folder from my laptop, with just the local username ie not the same as the network username on the "server", it just comes up with the warning box saying "the shared folder is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....Access is denied".
What I want it to do is bring up the Windows network logon box prompting for username and password. Why won't it ask for a valid username and password when I try to access the folder?
Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks
