Bandwith

In my project I'm designing a website for which could be used for my college in which it is anticipated there could be upwards of 250 logged during class time as the site contains many resources used in the lessons.

When it comes to looking for a host I'm totally clueless.

Would anybody know how much bandwith would be used up if a site averages approximately 100 people logged on at any given time?
That would be active users, not idling and the average page size is around 40kb.
Also, could MS Access cope with this as each student would have their own area which would constantly being accessed?

Regards,
B&W

Does your college not have their own IIS server? If so, you could just get them to setup a new site and run your project off of that. They should also be able to share the site, giving you a shortcut to modify it if you have to.

It does not actually need to be hosted. What I need to be able to say is "I've done my research, I'd need this amount of disk space, I'd use this much bandwidth each month and this is the host that I would use"

Well, do the math.

100 users * 40KB = 4 megabytes.

As for MS Access/JET. No, I don't think it would be able to cope.

Jet is designed for 25 concurrent users, and won't let you use any more. I recommend that you upgrade to something more powerful. MSDE (SQL Server 2000 "Lite") and "SQL Server 2005 Express" are both freeware and very powerful. I'd recommend SQL Server 2005 Express over MSDE as it doesn't have a connection limit unlike MSDE.

Please note that there are reliability and security issues with SQL Express on a shared hosting platform. Therefore, SQL Express is not recommended on a shared hosting environment. If you need SQL Express, then go for a dedicated server.
