Help with website
ok i have a feeling this is in the totally wrong section, but i have a problem.
i cant decide what web hosting to go with godaddy has 5gb disk space and 250gb transfer and 10 mysql databases. the second choice is compy and that has unlimiited databases but only 5gb transfer and 300mb disk space. those are the 2 im looking at. now, i wanted to know if i was trying to make a site like myspace would i want more databases(compy) or more space(godaddy). unless one of you can find me a better site those are both in the range of 4 bucks a month. sorry for posting in the wrong section but i couldnt really find a website general section |

MySpace, you say? well, they must have HUGE database to store all the information, plus they must have huge transfer, as they got millions of hits every single day. so I fear you'll have to find some host providing both things. basically, if your website is going to store lots of data, then having more database support is important. if your website is going to have many visitors, transfer is more important. |

i was going to post this in the web hosting section but what do u think of this deal
http://www.2mhost.com/personal-website-hosting.html same as godaddy in transfer and space and beats godaddy and prices and databases their rules sorta suck though....if i had forums and kids posted porn....i mean its a forum..would you really think they would shut me down? also a quick question how much can 1 mysql database really hold? like if i made 1 just to store users and their passwords and maybe a little profile for them or something would it really eat up databases |

looks cheap and nice, but note they have no ASP, only PHP.
if you planned to use ASP, forget about it. and yes, if kids post porn in forum and the moderation team don't remove it in reasonable time range, the host can ban the account. sounds reasonable to me. |

ASP is used for generating dynamic web sites.
PHP is also used for the same purpose, for example this whole forum is built with PHP language. |

Okay...I wouldn't worry about the number of MySql databases or space, to be honest. By the time you run out of either one it'll be time to move out of the $4/month hosting range anyway.
As for a login script, stop by Scripts.com, the script repository site for the entire Dev Shed network. Also, several of us here are crossover users from several of the sites. While DevShed does have a dedicated PHP forum, don't hesitate to post questions here as well. We don't want to push you away. I, for one, develop my own sites in PHP since I don't have a Windows host.

See couple of things here that you should know. First of all you can choose either of the packages that you are thinking you want to buy. Both have more than enough space you will require in the next couple of years to come. Next, you just need one database and not more than one. You use different tables to stores different contents in and not different databases, so one is enough. You will never be able to make a website like myspace if you are hunting for a login script somewhere on the web. Websites like myspace are more than a login script and you should talk to a web developer company to consult the feasibility. Your choice of hosting environment and database will also depend on the programming language that your developer is going to use. So talk to him before you buy any hosting package. I hope this helps and clears some of your doubts. |
